Sage TXL vs TXL-F

I have the opportunity to get either a TXL or TXL-F 7ft 10 #2 at an incredibly good price. I messed around with the the TXL yesterday (not sure what line was on it, probably a sci anglers of some type) and it is the sweetest rod that I've ever cast, unbelievably accurate, I like it even more than my #4 Z-axis.

The TXL-F however was not built up and I could only have a look at the blank, which is not really a fair comparison. What I would like to know is what is the difference, if any, between the 2?

I have the TXL 000wt and 3wt both in 7'10". I have also fished the TXL 00wt and 2wt. I have cast (not fished) a couple of TXL-F's including the 000wt and 2wt. The TXL-F's seem a little faster and crisper but how this translates into actual fishing I am not sure. All the people i have spoken to who have fished the TXL-F's, seem to love them. The TXL 3wt is the best small stream rod I have ever had the pleasure of fishing. Make sure that you match the TXL or TXL-F rods with the Sage QDT II line as it balances them perfectly. I have tried the rod with some other lines including SA and all of them overloaded the rod and slowed the action. If I had the choice I would probably go with the TXL-F as its a 4pc and easier to travel with.

I fished with Tony Kietzmans TXL-F a couple of Decembers ago.
As Darryl says, the TXL-F is a little faster, nice for the windy day.
Didn't really make me want to go out and buy one, and I still love my TXL #00.

I think they have better length options in the TXL-F if I'm not mistaken?
My TXL could use an extra foot IMO, but maybe that'll change the action?

If I had the choice I would probably go with the TXL-F as its a 4pc and easier to travel with.

Nailed it - my TXL 00wt (built before the F version was available) often doesn't make it on trips involving air travel because the sections are longer than sections of a 9' 4-piece that I've chosen my luggage for.

But there are other advantages to the shorter sections - nice to take in half when bashing through thick bush, and while hiking it's a much more convenient size packed down into 4 pieces.

The old TXLs have a lovely action but the reel seats were standard through the range and therefore a little heavy on the lighter line models - limiting the choice of reels to get a balanced outfit when casting. I think at least some of the difference in action people report between the two versions can be attributed to less weight in the butt making it seem more crisp or sensitive.

I built my own TXL 00wt with aluminium slide band on cork which made a discernable difference compared to factory models. But now the factory built TXL-F models have lighter reel seats so it's less of an issue. If I was custom building a TXL-F then I personally would stay away from nickel silver hardware to keep it as light as possible.

Andrew, I can't remember if you've had a throw with my TXL #2, but it's just a little slow (even with the sage #2 line). Like the guys above say, the advantage of a slightly faster rod and 4 pieces as opposed to 3 should tip you in favour of the TXL-F.

Andrew, it all depends on what you like. The TXL-F is not exactly "faster" than the TXL, but slightly crisper in action. It's a lot lighter than the TXL, and of course (as mentioned) comes in 4 pieces. I'd go for the TXL-F IF you like a slightly crisper action. Depends on what you want to do with it, and in which weight as well. In the #2 I'd get a TXL, anything heavier a TXL-F.
