    Default ID these fish please

    Anyone able to help me ID these barbs?

    I caught them in the Magaliesberg in the NW Province.
    Maybe a Marico or Goldy BUT it has two very prominent red dots on its tail. And also one prominent red spot on it's dorsal.
    Spots are also all over and in no general pattern.

    Hey Mario,

    I think these might be juvenile yellows and they are possibly been subjected to black spot, caused by metacercaria (which is basically an external parasite)? Quite commonly found on yellows, especially in winter. As for the red spots, also found on them but don't ask me what that is, possibly also a form of parasite that attacks cetain areas on the fish. The red spots I find on our vaal yellows, generally always seem to be located on the same areas of each fish.....wierd but just a guess

    The Lesser-Spotted Barb. The More-Spotted Barb has 6 more spots.

    Shame, poor little guy was pretty banged up!
    I have a perfect pic of a baby SM underwater but for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere......Think I also saw one one on of the YWG writeups?

    They are found in South Africa and in large quantities in the Limpopo system, but I'm not sure about the Magaliesberg?

    Could be baby yellows. Both sawfins and clanwilliam yellows have spots on them when they are small so I don't see why smallmouth yellows shouldn't.
