Which video is it?
My first few fish on fly were bass, as a young teenager in Germiston lake (by the lapa). I can still remember I used a 6/7 weight Shakespeare fiberglass/composite rod, and I remember the fly that I used although I have no idea what it's called (looks a bit like a Mrs Simpson with the wing riding only on the top of the shank, mohawk style). After that I caught a few a trout at Dunkeld one weekend while shooting a wedding there. I had no idea what I was doing, but I guess stocky bashing doesn't count as real fly fishing either, nor does bass fishing, nor this, nor that, except dry fly fishing for wild trout in small streams...

That is Gordon van der Spuy that lands the fish with his hand. Not the best Vaal fisherman, but definitely a good stream fisherman and great flytier!
Very true firephish, it think often we over complicate this sport/hobby and forget why we really do it....
I think the main factor is have a look at the water clarity in that video, a lot of guys learn to fish on the Vaal and don't learn to approach fish properly. Over December I stayed at Kinmel just outside Rhodes, there were two noobs there and they caught two fish over a week due to the fact that they had no idea how to approach fish properly or give a decent presentation

You are not comparing apples with apples here. Can't argue with cathcing a ton of fish on the Bok, but you are going to be catching a ton of really small fish. You can go out on the Vaal and land pretty decent fish without too much fuss, which I think is what Thor there is saying.

when my mates and I started fishing the vaal about 5 years ago.. we would get 3-6 a day.. if we were lucky, since then we have gotten to the point where we get up to 30 fish each in a day.. you cant say that there isnt any skill in nymphing for SM.. in fact, try SM yellows in small streams.. unless you know what you're doing, you will leave the water unhappy.. everytime
To be fair, thor made no mention of size. Sure, i agree catching a "decent" small stream trout takes a higher degree of skill / dedication (most of the time). I think catching lots of small yellows on nymph takes quite a bit more skill than catching lots of small trout on dry becuase you _really_ need to be "in contact" with your flies to pick them ...
Yes, both can be elevated to a sublime level of skill
