For sure, this is the by far the most challenging fishing i have ever expierienced, i recon a return trip in april, when flows should be better is in order
Go for it, i especially appreciated this trip because construction of the giant Polihali dam on the Senqu just above Mokhtlong is due to begin this year. On completion the gorges we visited will most likely be underwater ... pretty sad

Hiking at that altitude is a bit though, with the thin air.

Nymphing, is fly fishing in another dimension
On the morning of third day, an icy wind came up and we where slightly concerned about descending back to KZN the following day with thunderstorms predicted. We decided to explore down the Senqu for 2 hours or so and then try to make it back to the top of Rockeries pass by lunch, and attempt to descend back to MCC while conditions where good.
Here we started to find some seriously deep pools, with some good trout. But, to be-honest, i was to wrecked to contemplate fishing:
We also started to meet some of the locals, they were friendly and curious (don't think they get to see many "outsiders"):
After a tricky scramble out of the gorge, we hiked hard back to rockeries pass, arriving around 11h30. Had a quick lunch and began the descent:
I would be lying if i said this descent didn't almost kill me, it took about 5 hours to reach the bottem and start the long walk back to MCC ... only the thought of the waiting cold beers got me through it. THis is looking back at the escarpment form where the road to MCC starts:
Hope you guys enjoyed.

catch and release
Thanks for taking me on a great trip. All sort of shades of green with envy. Too old and legs would never forgive me but I can still dream.
