Awesom Possum Tabanas
This is Tabanas that caught lots of fish for me in Maclear.
Recipe
Hook: Dry fly #8 to #22
Thread: Brown
Ribbing: Flash/tinsel
Dubbing: Seals fur/Hare's ear etc
Body: Possum body hair (but can be substituted for any other hair, Not one of the deer species, as it rides to high)
Hackle: Grizzly long soft (but you can use a variety to suit requirements)
Post: red/pink egg yarn.
Tie in the tinsel.
Dubb body and stop far enough from the hook eye, to allow you to space to tie in the fur/hair and post and hackle.
Tie in the Possum hair.
Tie in the hackle, with the stem parralel and towards the back of the hook.
A neat little trick to keep the hair out of the way, is to use a spare bobbin and wrapp a couple of threads along the hair and hook the bobbin over the hackle keeper.
Tie in the egg yarn post. A little super glue on the last 2 thread wraps helps to hold all in place, with lots less hassles.
Wrap the hackle around the post. 4 or 5 times.
Tie of hackle.
WHip finish.
Grip the excess egg yarn in a tweezer or hackle plier.
Trim until there is a 1mm or so extra. Melt the extra 1mm or so with a lighter.

as you can see from the last photo, this specific version, is a fairly LARGE fly.
But I have tied it down to a #22.
The big difference in tying it with hair instead of deer is the way it sits in the water.
Deer hair or elk hair rides MUCH higher in the water. Almost "ON TOP" of the water.
The hair form Possum, cats, rabbits etc sits "in" the surface film.

I have an order for 30 Awesum Possum Tabanas flies in different sizes from Maclear.
An easy way to get rid of some of my barbed hooks.

Get a Spey Rod and put a Multiplier on it and go and stand in the Orange and cast that fly down and across and skate it over the water and I promise you the fish will take that fly as if it's a small rodent. Don't think those kind of takes are going to be gentle 10" Trout Sips.
Leave the barb on for those big Mermaids in the Richtersveld.
The only streetfight that would be tougher is if you drive down to one of the Shibeens in Port Nolloth.
