Hi
Let me know what blank you want and I can give you an estimation.
Or have a look at http://www.streamxflyfishing.co.za/Rod_Building.htm

My opinion, is that, people who have customised builds, are not doing it to save money. This is the wrong objective, Like fly tying, it doesnt save money on flies. People who want custom builds, do so because they want something different and unique. If its about money, rather look at your budget, and get the best rod that you can, off the shelf for that price. Its going to save money as oppsed to a custom build. Also check for a second hand premium rod, as sometimes a discontinued model might come up very cheap. For example a current Sage TXL F for example might sell for around R6k ofr more, whereas you could pick up the older TXL, for less than half that, from someone who wants to upgrade to the new model. Its about keeping your ear to the ground and putting the word out. Good luck, but I agree, I dfont think you are going into a rod build with the right justification. Also bear in mind the labout on a rod build is the same for a cheap blank and componets, as it is for top class, so rather buy a cheaper rod, and save towards a premium build. Just my opinion.

Maybe I misunderstood the question.

I have assembled a rod or 2 myself.
With some help of very experienced rod builders.
Have a look at this website

You can buy a complete kit.
You can work out if it is worth it or not.
It might not come with the rod bag, but you can order it seperately, or have a bag made up locally.
you can also order a rod tube or make up your own.

You dont have to have all the fancy tools if you are plannning to do a single rod.
For the wrapping of the guides, you can take a card board box, cut a V in either side to hold the rod in, or you can wrap it by holding it in your hand.
To tension the thread, you can run it thru a phone book with a jug of water on it, for extra tension, should you require it.
To do the rod varnish, you can use the rotiserie motor of a Webber braai. Just make sure you use long life batteries, because it is terrible to not be close should the batteries run flat, and the varnish is not dry.
I built a rod, without the branded rod bag, and tube, for about 40 or 50% of the shop price.
