Default Culinary delights at the riverbank

The rigors of flyfishing can create net calory deficits if we are not careful. If this occurs you are at risk of losing your hard-earned boep. To this end I am always of my stomach's requirements while out on the river/lake.

I find the river most challenging as I don't tend to get back to the truck for lunch so have to carry a packed lunch. I find that sandwiches are best when prepared on the riverbank - don't make them beforehand otherwise the bread goes soggy. I carry a small roll of salami, a hunk of cheese and some relish, this makes a most tasty sandwich provided you get the portions correct. The salami and cheese should be cut a minumum of 1/4 inch thick and don't be shy with the relish. There should be more ingredients than bread! A small slice of cake (preferably home-made) and a mug of coffee will complete a satisfactory meal. I also carry trail mix and muesli bars for those mid-morning snackish moments.

When fishing a lake or if not moving far from the truck on the river, the options are greatly enhanced. Dad has always impressed on me the great benefits of a cooked meal and a beer for lunch wherever possible. A cast-iron pot, a gas cooker, some lamb chops, onion, potatoes, wine and you can prepare a very nourishing meal. These are usually reserved for multi-day trips when time seems endless.

A good meal and a nap on the bank provides a sense of well-being and improves your concentration for the afternoon's fishing.

I would love to know your thoughts on bankside cuisine.

Good one Kevin. Cant wait to see all the comments on this thread. Flyfisherman are by their very nature creative creatures. I am sure we will see some interesting combos coming out of this one

If I.m spending a full day at the water then my "rations" are along the lines off:
    1 x piece cold boerie
    1 x roast beef & mustard sami
    1 x apple or pear
    Enough? nourishing malt/hops based fluid.

I avoid tomato's/avo 'cos I find they tend to get "mushy" being in the back pack in the sun on the Vaal.

The most important of all is the extra cold frosty in the cooler bag in the boot for the end of the day

Nice! When I have time to make my chow my creativity extends only as far as what type of cheese and what brand of mustard I use on the rolls. Other than that it's a standard meal:

Portugeuse Rolls with Ham, Cheese, Tomato and wholegrain mustard. Boring I know but I look forward to eating them on the river. I'm not too fussed about the sogginess though. They seem to be okay if I keep them in ziplock bags.

In addition to that is a couple of Bar ones and recently I've been taking a packet of wine gums to chew on during the day.

I have a hydration pack so I only drink water during the fishing unless it's cold then the hip flask comes out - OB's!

I want to add a small flask for coffee - I have one but it's too big to be practical.

Then like Herman I like to have some beers in an esky back in the car for the end of the day.

Grant, for when it's really cold try a flask with black coffee mixed 50/50 with some Bells or equivalent. Really stops the shivers and gets the blood flowing again

I consider myself something of a snadwich fanatic ( Basically if I could, I'd stick every meal between two slices of bread!!! )

Mine are fairly complex sandwiches, so I'd have to carry a whole extra bag to prep them on the river....I make them before, but have a particular way of making them so nothing gets soggy.

    Here goes:

Slice of fresh Bread, thick sliced.
    Good dollop of German Mustard
    Healthy portion of German Salami
    Thinly sliced Tomato
Sliced Lemon and Pepper Chicken Breast
    Grated cheddar
    Baby Spinach
Slice of fresh Bread, thick Sliced

I make at least 4 of these ( I usually make lunch for whoever I'm fishing with. Neal take note!!! )

In that order of preparation, they stay just perfect for nearly 24 hours and at around 11 or 12 on a fishing morning, I can tell you few things taste better!!

I also make at least one sweet one with a nice home made fig jam, or something similar

Add to that a muesli bar or two, a naartjie or 3, some fresh coffee in two flasks ( small one for the river, and a bigger one left in the truck ) A hydration pack filled with Naartjie game and a bag of biltong....... Even if you don't see a gfish all day, you'll at least come home satisfied!!

Some people are like Slinkies.... Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Sounds lekka, you should start a drive through sandwich bar.
