A thorough Escherichia coli investigation was recently performed in Du Toit's Kloof, which included the Smalblaar River and its tributaries, as well as the Elandspad River. High E. coli cell counts were detected throughout the Smalblaar River and lower Elandspad River, which makes the water potentially dangerous if consumed by humans. The danger involves acquiring gastrointestinal disease after drinking the river water. Fly fisherman should bring their own water or fluids for rehydration when visiting the Smalblaar River and Elandspad River. The source of the E. coli is human and warm-blooded animal faecal matter. Please note that wild animals, such as baboons, mongoose and otters may readily consume human faeces and spread potentially harmful bacteria to more remote areas in Du Toit's Kloof. Therefore, it is extremely important to dig a 30-50 cm hole when taking a dump in the bushes; the hole should be filled with soil and covered with a rock that covers the area properly; your bush toilet should also be more than 50 m or further away from the main flow of the river and most importantly above the winter flood level. The necessary government authorities have been notified about the issue and the CPS committee will keep track of the proceedings and management of the problem.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
