Default Xplorer Guide 111 fly reel

Has anyone had any experience with these reels as I am looking for a reel for dam and light saltwater use on a no 5/6 rod and the price is around what I am prepared to pay?

I would also like to make contact with any flyfishers that are in the Little Brak River area to compare notes, flies, etc. I have retired so available most of the time.

I have one in that weight. For the price its absolutely flawless. Good drag and quite light and has good backing capacity.

Thanks Karoo for the info. Is the reel anodised so I can use it in saltwater and how much backing would I be able to put on with a WF6F fly line? Also, do you know the actual weight of the reel? Any info is much valued.

I think that it will be able to cope with light salt water use. I dont use it for that application so cant really say for sure. The XPLA, which is a bit cheaper, is a good reel as well, but it might be slightly heavier.

    Hi white death.

I also looked at the same reel, as it is featured in the latest Wildfly tv episode "highland gold" where Jeremy Rochester used it to catch that 10lb largie. Good reel, but for R400 more I took the 3-tand, which I think has a lighter weight (3.8 oz) and a better sealed drag. Hope you enjoy whatever reel you decide on. P.s. David Levene (previously Stealth) now from Featherlite.co.za is the importer/supplier in the country and this should be favourable in the back-up department. I just bought a TF50.

    Some interesting links worth reading:

p.s. I'm refering to the TF series.

Thanks for the info. Where did you purchase the 3 Tand and actual price paid as R400 more puts it around the R1600 mark. The lightness of the reel appeals to me as my casting hand is held together with two plates and twelve screws after a quad bike accident and although trying for a long time, I cannot cast far enough with my other hand for saltwater purposes.

Contact Richard Simpkins from Urban Flyfisher@R2100 for a T50 . Tell him I referred you. What is the weight of the Xplorer Guide3 ? Nowhere could I get the specs on that reel, but think someone said around 4-4.3oz vs 3-tand T50's 3.8oz.

Ja jis those 3tands are nice for the price. They are slightly more expensive than the guide, but I think if you have the cash available its a good buy
