Judging from the activity that has been there over the past few months, you need to be there first light (even before), the leeries are about irrespective of water conditions or clarity. The last few I have seen come out was all early morning taken at the area close to the footbridge up to the campsite (strand side of the lagoon).

My 2C's for today, however keep in mind I am a complete novice, so any other takers on Zandvlei?

    Regards
A LOT has happened over the last 2 weeks. If you feel you can fish for leeries under the current conditions with a clear conscience go right ahead. Please take the time to try and educate other fishermen around you and encourage CAR.

    Thanks Buzz.

I still wonder what caused the brown discolouration.

    Barend

Try the vlei this weekend and feedback.

As you know, 10 leeries were stocked. These were all caught by the "vagabond brigade?.

    Only mullet and carp left.

Guess we'll have to join the Hermanus lot in targetting juveniles.

The brown discolouration was caused by an algal bloom (red/brown tide) caused by excessive nutrient levels in the water. The question now is "Where did the nutrients come from?". There were reports of a sewage spill not long ago but I don't know the finer details. Residents reported a "KKA smell" before the fish started dying off.

<smile> Matt fishes the Matchbox area where the easy to catch juveniles are. There are proper leeries at Location Y. You need a duck with outboard to reach it though.

    Default Leerie Roundup 8pm - 11:30pm Thursday 5-04-2012

Decided to go down to Zandvlei to check on the current status and had a chat with some rangers on patrol. I was about to leave when 7 leeries were sighted trapped in the channel. Out of nowhere the "vultures" showed up with their rods, treble hooks and F-You attitudes. A rescue effort was initiated by Cape Nature and concerned fishermen and after a lot of effort all were captured and safely released into the sea. I have new respect for Cassy Sheasby and her team as well as Chris Fallows, Ian Klopper, Grant Meyer, Mark Stotesbury and everyone who assisted. I regret that I did not get everyone's names so nobody shoot me because you were not mentioned by name.

The guys jumped into the water and started herding the fish towards the sea. Unfortunately it was low tide so the sandbar was exposed. The leeries were captured with throw nets and then "sprinted" over the sand and revived in the sea. Really AWESOME stuff. Hopefully the video footage will come out OK as it was shot in low light. Will upload to Facebook in due course.
