Not really. The water is borderline toxic. There have been even more sewage spills recently and the pondweed is starting to suffer. Algal blooms are becoming increasingly possible with all the extra nutrients. There are a few small leeries around but one wonders for how long.

I was informed that two "people" were seen catching small leeries and putting them in a bucket, when asked what they were doing they said they were using them as Marlin bait. When they were told to release them they tried to convince the person that they were mullet and ducked with the bucket of fish. One of the people is is said to work at the fishing shop in Diep River, just off the main road next to Meltz. (Fred Tuckers Agencies)

Hi All,
It would seem that Zandvlei is slowly recovering from the algae bloom, the small fish are prominent. Seen lots of mullet in the lagoon and water quality is good (according to my limited knowledge). However, Zandvlei management have stepped up a notch, they have patrols through the night (no more night fishing - new regulation?) and apparently arrested two blokes last Saturday evening/Sunday Morning for night fishing... Or so I was told by the patrol. Hats for for the conservationists!
Downside, try casting a wind resistant popper or gurgler in 40kms/hour plus winds - not fun...

Yes, there are signs of improvement but the odd sewage spill is still a threat. Access to Zandvlei between sunset and sunrise has always been illegal.
Here's a comment from a Marine watch volunteer: 10-March
Seems we have a return of the continuous problem with Night fishing on the Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve - A dying estuary?
as member of the Marine estate neighbor hood watch we are having nightly run ins with these guys , When IS LAW enforcement going to do some thing about this ? Pumping of prawns, throw nets just some of the things on the go.
