Default Announcing the Western Cape River Championships!!

The moment you have all been waiting for has finally arrived -

Entries for the Western Cape River Championships sponsored by Stealth and Upstream Fly Fishing are OPEN!

The competition is open to anyone and everyone and is completely free! It will be structured on a ladder format (described below) and will run for the duration of the CPS river season (1 September – 31 May) each year. At the end of the season we will have a prize giving and announce the winners. Prizes will not only be provided for the top placed Senior and Junior anglers but 'biggest climber' and 'most matches fished' will be awarded too.

We have some amazing prizes lined up from Stealth Fly Fishing, Smith Optics, Airflo and Upstream Fly Fishing in the form of the gorgeous Infinity Fly Rod, a pair of crystal clear Smith Optics Eyewear, super slick Airflo lines and juicy Upstream shop vouchers – total valued at over R10 000!!! More prizes to be published as they are secured!

The River Championships are designed with the following objectives in mind:

    1) To increase participation in the sport of competitive Fly Fishing by engaging the public and presenting the sport in an informal and fun manner
    2) Increase the interpersonal exchange of skills between anglers
    3) To introduce young and/or inexperienced anglers to new skills and techniques
    4) To increase the cross pollination off skills and to strengthen the relationship between Boland and Western Province Fly Fishing Associations
    5) The ladder will form the basis for the Western Province and Boland river trials
    6) Most importantly, to have a boat load of fun and make new friends!

Please note: The WCRC are not affiliated with the CPS and if matches are to be fished on CPS controlled rivers, normal bookings though CPS must be made prior to fishing. While you do not have to be a CPS member to fish the WCRC, you will be required to become a member if you wish to fish on their waters.

    Design of the initial ladder:

The initial ladder will we created by ranking anglers according to their current standing on, and in order of, the following recognised ranking lists:
    1) SAFFA National Ranking list
    2) WPFFA and Boland Ranking lists – Names will be combined in alternating order
ALL CURRENT WPFFA AND BOLAND ANGLERS HAVE AUTOMATICALLY BEEN ADDED TO THE RANKING LIST
    3) All other entries

The starting ladder will be published on Monday the 1st of September 2014. Once the season is finished, the updated ladder will be saved and used the following year.

How to move up and down the ladder:

Angler A may, at his leisure, challenge an angler up to 2 places above his position, to a match. If angler A wins the match, he moves up the ladder and takes angler B’s position. Angler B then moves one place down the ladder.

    Example:
Angler A (15th) challenges Angler B (13th) and wins. Angler A moves to 13th and Angler B moves to 14th. Angler C who was in 14th before the match, moves down to 15th.

Should an angler wish to challenge another angler to a match, he must contact the other angler and propose 2 dates on which to fish. These days may not occur on the same weekend. If neither of these dates work for both anglers, a third date on one of these same weekends may be proposed. Should the angler being challenged still not be available to fish, the result will be as if s/he has lost the match and normal movement on the ladder will occur.

    Example:
Angler A (15th) challenges Angler B (13th) to fish on either Saturday of the following two weekends. Angler B is unable to fish on these Saturdays. Angler A then proposes the first Sunday but Angler B is still unavailable. Angler A would win this match and move up to 13th position. Angler B would move to 14th position.

A challenger may only challenge the same angler once per month.

Once a match has been fished (or ceded), the result is to be communicated to the records officer as soon as possible and no later than by 5pm the following Monday. This is to be emailed to wcrchampionships(at)gmail.com.

    What constitutes a match?

A match is fished between 2 anglers for a period of 3 hours. Each angler is to fish for half of the elected period and marshal the other angler for the remainder. The session is to be broken up into 2 x 45 minute session and alternate turns fishing. The decision as to which angler starts the session is to be decided by a coin toss before the match begins.
The angler with the most number of fish at the end of the session wins.
If there is a tie after the elected period, no movement on the log will occur.

Rules will be aligned with the most recent edition of FIPS Mouche rules.

    New entrants to the ladder:

Once the ladder is established, should an angler wish to join the Championships, the angler must apply to the records officer via email. Once approved, the applicant may challenge one angler (of his choice) in the bottom third of the ladder. If the applicant wins the match, the applicant will take the position of the challenged. Should the applicant lose this match, s/he will be relegated to the last position on the log.

    Around the steel no tortur'd worm shall twine, No blood of living insect stain my line;
Let me, less cruel, cast feather'd hook, With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook,
Silent along the mazy margin stray, And with fur-wrought fly delude the prey

    What are the prizes?
Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time...
