Hi guys im from south africa and just recently moved to canterbury. im a salt water fly fisherman and dont know the area any advice would be a great help im willing to travel to get to the fishing spots.
I can categorically state you won't be setting too many fires in the salt water flyfishing world in Canterbury.
The river mouths usually hold the ubiquitous Kahawai (Aussie salmon) this time of the year and it'll just start getting better as the warmer season progresses.
You might be lucky and stumble upon a few gurnard and bluecod, but these are better further down the coast and off the west coast.
There are also the usual sea run browns that make an appearance.
The better saltfly is on the north island.
There you can expect snapper, kingfish (southern yellowtail) and a host of other species.
Get yourself on the local forum in NZ.
There is a dedicated salt fly mob that do a few outings and meetings.
Hope this helps....
PS You have some pretty serious surroundings on the South Island for some dedicated trout fishing though.
I know......those mud marlin aren't quite the same as the salty stuff
