Korrie, as far as I know the SA Record is still the LM caught below the weir on The Vaal at Douglas. There are pics somewhere on this forum. Caught on a Rapala.

I have however seen pics in our local "rag" of LM caught at the Vaal Dam of 15 odd kg.

I doubt very much that the fish survived, as there was blood everywhere, and the pic was taken meters away from the bank.

Luckily the bank anglers are now sticking to the law, and in the water a pic and a release.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

    Default Beast LM Yellowfish

Oom John Southey's Rapala caught LM was "only" 18Kg's.

There was one in the Vaal dam I remember seeing at 22Kgs many years ago.

The SA record is 25Kg's (depending on where you look and what you believe)

Something I've never experienced before.......when I removed the fly from her massive mouth she "bit" me. She closed her jaws and tried to crush my hand which made me wonder if they do the same to their prey? I wasn't crying or anything but it was freaking sore so I can imagine how a little minnow would feel. Possibly with bigger items instead of just inhaling / sucking they might actually crush their victim to death?

    Hi
Some of the different species do have crusher plates in their mouths.
How far was your hand into the fish's mouth?
just the lips or a bit deeper?
Seeing the mouths of some of the fish, they can probably swallow a tennis ball.
