    As a general rule I date my tippet when I buy it, and replace for the new season, even if it has been stored properly.
    To answer the question about items sitting on shop shelf, most fly shops I know, put new stock at the back to avoid having old stock (and to avoid dusty items).
    Where you may encounter a problem is a non-specialist stores where item may be on the shelf for years.
