    Default Monkey bites

My brother in law ( who is an Australian ) has just been bitten by a monkey in the bush!
    How should I feel?
Seriously, what treatment should one apply ?
Anyone with any experience of this? The bite I mean.

    Hi Charles,
One word, RABIES. When you find out you are infected it's too late.
He must consult a doc now. The course of treatment last about 6-8 weeks, four shots if I remember correctly. He will have to make sure they have the same drug in Oz if he does not finish the course in SA before he returns Oz. I was bitten by a bat about 2 years ago and went on the course of meds.

I was bitten by a vervet monkey years ago when growing up in Natal. I was about 8 years old and we lived in Cowies Hill which was very rural back then, very few houses and quite a lot of wild life. The Doctor treated it the same as a dog bite. Cleaned the puncture on my skin, and a course of antibiotics in case of bacterial infection.

For monkey bites, postexposure prophylaxis valacyclovir or acyclovir should be given for 14 days

If he's Australian, give the monkey a tetanus shot.
