    Default Backing help

    Hey Guys

    I need a little help.

I am busy putting together an 8wt Salt rod and reel - So I ordered the line, but I need to get some help with what backing to use.

I would normally ask the flyshop, but I am ordering online considering there is like an 80 Euro price difference.

Its an 8wt floating line, I am trying to find out the best backing and how much I would need on the reel?

    Thanks for any help guys

    Cheers

    Jade

Jade, normally the reel specs should tell you, or send a mail to the people you are ordering from. Different backing types are thinner than others, and therefore the reel would hold more.

    Thanks Andre.

I found the specs and it needs about 100m - Just not sure what pound? Its for small estuary work / largies and seatrout . . . Maybe even a salmon up here.

To be honest, I am surprised how little information there is out there on the topic.

    Thanks again.

I use 20lb 50yds braid for LM dunno if that's of any help to you? At the moment I'm gooing Shilton SL6 with 8wt floating line (100ft) and 9ft-15ft leader.

Jade, if you use 50lbs Gelspun you'll be able to at least double that capacity.

Thanks Gerrit, I was worried that 20lbs might be to light though, I think I might need to go heavier

    Some good points

But check with the reel manufacturer, I know there are one or 2 reel manufacturers, (maybe have changed now) that do not honour the gaurantee if Gelspun is used on the reel. (with the Gelspun/or similar, there is double the amount of line on the reel, double the pressure build up (wrap some mono around your finger, a couple of times and feel the pressure build up) multiply that a couple hunderd times on a reel)
