Question How to clean my fly rod

I saw some white marks on my rod and decided it is time to clean the rod anyway.
Closer inspection reveals that my rod it very dirty. Can't remember when I cleaned it last.
There were white marks on the ferrols apoxy and brown coat on the upper side all along the length of the rod. I could scratch this off with my nail. The bottom side were the line was hitting was clean.
I tried soft soap and find that I could improve some areas with series rubbing with a wet cloth.
My rod is stil not clean. I thought of buffing it?
Any ideas how to clean the rod without damage and what chemicals can be used?
