Hi Ryan.....that rod is fine for bass. Reel depends on your budget...good start up reel would be a kilwell genesis.Line would be a decent 9w floating line.I would suggest a few poppers, brush flies and large wooly buggers to start with...good luck
Hi guys I have a hand me down Deane Bass/Saltwater rod that is a 8/9 wt. Would this be okay for bass? And what reel, line and flies do you recommend? And last but not least as I have never fly fished before where would be a good place to get fly casting lessons in KZN? Thanks in advance.

Make the line a Bass bug taper WF9F and buy an anodised reel then you can also use it in the salt. Keep your leaders shortish on the air resistant Bass flies to assist with your casting - length of rod tapering to 10 to 15lb at the tip especially if you are targeting heavy cover where the Bass wait for prey to pass by.
The rod should be fine for bass. Its a nice stiff rod, and therefore will do well for those hard strikes that you need for bass. Any matched reel will do, and try and find a line with as little stretch as possible, preferably a zero stretch line , because you need as much direct contact with the fly as possible. You must try and find a balance between a setup that is fast and stiff, while having the sensitivity to detect a subtle take. Normally with bass, you retrieve with the rod tip low down, so you would "feel" the take with the line and fingers, while having the strength in the rod for a hard strike.
The rod weight should do you well, for casting those nice big bass flies that you are going to need.
