Storing of unused flylines

A quick questions. I once heard that if you know that you are not going be using some of your flylines, you should store it unspooled? Is that really neccesary for prolonging line lifespan?

Depends how pedantic you want to be. I store all my lines on the reels, and have never had problems. Its easy to stretch a line out to get rid of memory if it has been stored for a long time, but a good line will suffer no ill effects.

i agree with andre but still have the habit of looping huge loops for storage. then hung the line on a small piece of 110mm plumbing pipe on the wall, nowadays the line lays flat on the shelf

Which good quality flyline, now available, is the least supple line. And how will one be able to see if one line is more supple than another line. I hang them over a pencil to see which one make the bigger loop!!!!???
And is it easier to cast a stiffer or more supple line?

I would be carefull doing this. you run the risk of introducing a twist in the line. A line should always be spooled to avoid twisting

braided core lines are more supple, and better to cast. Mono core lines are stiffer and can have memory issues

I spool my unused fly lines on an old bicycle rim. Lines I use often (2 to 5 weights) I leave on the reels. My salt water outfits (9 and 12 weight) only see action every couple of years, so those go on the bike rim.

Definatly braided core lines as far as possible. Mono core lines are generally cheaper and inferior to braided core, but if you are looking for a line with zero stretch, then sometimes a mono core line will be better. all depends on the application.
