Delicate cast, followed by a subtle take…. Water parting as if a torpedo was fired from where your last cast where…!!!! Ummmm! Sounds good!

I have been fishing competitive for a while now! Just before the Winter I started fly fishing for Carp! Just nice to change things up!!! A change is as good as a Holiday!

Went Carp hunting on Saturdays! I must have dipped to 30 tailing karp…Tried 5 or 6 different flies… Had four takes, only got two out.

I am new to this forum, and would like to start a group…. You can call it support group! (Almost feel like crying, hehe!!!) Al that carp! Only got two carp out!!!!

I would like to hear what your best go to fly have been for carp???? Add a picture please!???

At the end of the day we might get clever! And more Carp could be landed by us!!!

More than 5000 carp have been caught using the methods and patterns in this article so I guess it works. (300+ personally). The next step would be reading up on carp behavior eg. reaction to threats, weberian apparatus, pheromone release when hooked etc. This is a very interesting topic and carp behavior is much more complex than many people think. Hi Ulrich.welcome to the forum.
There is some really good carp water around our town.
I have tried various flies and found lighter colours definately take more fish compared to the darker flies most guys use across the country,like the carp fritz.
The other thing is approach.Our fish tend to pick up a fly easier when cast from behind the fish and pulled close past him towrds the back as apposed to castong past him and pulling in front of him.Maybe its the way they feed and their eyes pick up more passing on the side than directly in front of them.
I think we should go fish together sometime and swop ideas.

Hi Ulrich, We have been actively chasing Carp for a while now and have had some very good days, Jason is currently at Barberspan and hopefully I'll have some good video and stills of that trip to post.

Hy Core, that wil be great! I must agree…. I fished a darker fly that day, the other two friends that where with me… they had a beter strike rate…. Each caught 5 carp.

Some thing i picked up was that the carp wanted smaller flies… I caught my last carp on a olive Bead Head Ear Nymph. Much smaller, size 10# The second Carp I dipped to.

Seems that smaller carp might want smaller presentations. The water colour/ visibility will play a role…

The hole day I tried bigger flies…. Black Back stabber (much like crazy Charlie) I spooked half the fish I dipped to… (Did have success on it before…) So the water was clear enough for them to reject the bigger darker fly….

Wat is your best fly, in what colour combination do you prefer it in for Carp?????

Just use a small egg pattern in orange or yellow,but tie in a small section of marabou as a tail.If they are deeper then add a bead to either side of the round cotton ball.

It is also a backstabber crawdad imitation fly that we have evolved and tested extensively, took 23 Carp at Strydoms on the Vaal last week with it.

This might help a few of the folk starting out :The art of reading a carp's mind.

Carp do one thing for us pretty well to give us a shot at catching them... they telegraph their intentions based on behavior pretty clearly. By focusing on the behavior two things can be accomplished: 1. You can better target feeding fish and 2. You can get a better idea of what they are feeding ON so you can show them the right fly. Here are a few common behaviors you might see.

Tailing: Head down, tail up... this fish is eating and most importantly he is probably eating small things he digs out of the mud. Use nymphs, worms and backstabber patterns with some movement.
If you are unable to see the fish doing this some other visual clues such as a moving column of bubbles or even a mud cloud moving in a particular direction can indicate Carp feeding. Just cast in front and across with a floating line and a strike indicator (make sure your fly is on the bottom) and then with ZEN like concentration watch for the take.

Spawning: HUGE numbers of fish in shallows splashing around. For these fish the wining and dining is done and the party has started... they aren't looking to eat.

Cruising: These fish are in mid column moving. If they are moving quickly and deliberately they are unlikely to eat, but if the are meandering and moving slowly they will eat a food item that they come upon. Slowly drifting a nymph, damselfly nymph, or worm into them can get you a take.

Jumping: These fish are celebrating winning their fantasy football league, not eating... forget 'em.

Rushing: These fish are charging through the water sporadically, sometimes to the surface. They are probably busting baitfish. A small streamer can be just the ticket here.

Sunning or Laid Up: These guys are just chillin' and catching some rays... and not moving. They will take a small fly delicately presented right on their nose... but that's about it and not with regularity.

There you go... that's a start. Pay attention to what the fish is telling you and you will have a better chance of getting him to eat
