    Question Chipped ceramic bobbin tube

    Hi all

My cat was being a troll last night and threw my bobbin from the desk.

The tube looked fine, but when tying last night it kept cutting the thread (Not straight through but enough for the thread tension to cause a snap).
Upon closer inspection in noticed a small chip on the inside of the tube lip.

How can I repair this? :frown:

take plastic toothpic, put cobra wax on.

take it and put it in the bobbin.

small amount of pradly steel to fix chip

that is what I would have done. wax acts as release agent

could you post a photo? maybe you could even polish it out with 2000G sandpaper

LOL I do use my sisters cat and hare for dubbing. If I need grey, cat gets a comb. If I need white, it is the hares turn

If you look at some of the older gentlemen's ears, you might could find enough dubbing for a Grey Hair's Ear fly as well.

Chances are the crack is all the way through, throw it away and buy a new one.

Yup, if the ceramic sleeve is broken, its probably not repairable.

So upon further inspection it was as Booger Rose suspected. The tube itself was cracked.
But I still managed to fix it.
    Here follows the SBS.
    1. Drill out the remaining ceramic tube and glue from the sleeve surrounding it. so only the frame is left.
    2. Your ingredients:

    3. Cut the cotton off the both end from the earbud, file the ends nice and smooth with the wife's nail buffer(DON'T TELL HER, DON'T LET HER SEE YOU OR DEATH WILL BECOME YOU). The leather punch tool of a swiss army knife helps smooth out the inner tube. NO ROUGH/SHARP EDGES!

    4. Prep your pratley puttey.

    5. Insert the tube into the sleeve of the bobbin body. Using the knife push some putty into the sleeve to secure it roughly. then once that is complete add as much putty as you want around the sleeve and shape it to the way you normally hold your bobbin. When you have shaped it to the way you want, insert it in you vice so that the putty can cure. TIP: if the putty sticks to your hand and fingers while moulding put some baby power on your hands. The putty wont stick to your fingers any more. IMPORTANT: do not use baby powder when you do the initial prep of the putty!
    6. (Optional) Once the putty has cured you can sand it to smooth it even more. I find it kinda cool that the bobbin now has my thumbprint on it.
    7. The results:

So that is how I fixed it. Works as it did before the chipping episode. Only thing I'd change is maybe would've let the tube stick out 1 or 2mm more in the front .
The tube is solid with very little flex and the plastic is soft on thread. Tested 14/0 thread on it and it only snapped from to much tension.

    Lekker BOYS!
So tell me.... How Big's yours?
