My time of buying top of the range rods is over now with the sages etc sitting at about 14k now.
I am a tackle junkie and would love some new rods but the price is prohibitive.
I stopped buying at around the 8k mark.
I really dont understand how the average joe could afford 14k for a new fly rod?
    Unless you won the lotto?

True that, but you also don't need every new Sage that comes onto the market...

    Correct
Besides i dont think my casting/fishing will improve with the latest and greatest.
Ive settled on the Scott Radian as my primary rod and the sage xp as my backup.I dont think i could ever go wrong with those fine rods...

Very few rods have the "legacy or reputation" that the XP have.
I wonder if we have a poll on "if you had to choose an old rod, which one would you choose to fish forever" The XP will be one of the most voted rods.

Nymphing, adds depth to your fly fishing.

Yes, the XP would probably be up there on the list of "rods with a cultural following", although the list might be a ;little subjective depending on who you speak to. Interestingly enough, Cabelas, requisitioned sage to manufacture a batch of XP's for them, and then they struggled to sell them, so perhaps the XP hype dissapeared with the rod. I think part of the reason for this, is the American market, which tends to buy the ,"new model" no matter how good the old model is. Its easy for a rod manufacturer to boost sales, they simply bring out a new model of a great rod, and tout it as better and with more modern technology, get a few big names to write a few favourable reports, and then intoduce it to the American market.

Wonder if they're bringing out a new ESN any time soon?

Interesting question. The ESN is one of Sages few "speciality rods", the others being the Bass, and the Pike rods. I think the "99" might have also been a speciality rod, but people seem to be of the opinion that the 99 was superceded by the ESN, which I doubt, because they are quite different. I dont know where Sage would go with a rod to replace the ESN.
My favorite rods from sage have been the 99 and the ESN. When it comes to less specialised sages, I loved the ZXL and the Z-Axis, but not for all things, as there were things I tried to do with them that they were not ideally suited to.
