    Default Salt Fly casting help

    Good day guys,

I am in dire need of some fly casting lessons, but struggling to find on short notice. I live in Hong Kong and have a trip to Xmas Island in October, could anyone suggest how and where I can go for good casting lessons? (I can travel quite easily)

    Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Rian

Rian, I don't know instructors in HK. Plenty here in Aussie if you are travelling this way.
Casting lessons are always good, no matter what your skill level.
However, one thing the lessons won't be able to give you enough of is casting short in strong wind - and that's 90% of the casting at CXI. Been there twice.
You'll have plenty wind most days and bones appearing with regularity at surprisingly short range, and invariably not at the wind angle you're hoping for.
Majority of shots will be between 50 and 20 feet, sometimes even closer. The closer they are the harder it becomes to load the rod and turn over the fly accurately.

My suggestion is to get yourself down to some shallow water when the wind is blowing its tits off and practice casting at targets about 30 to 40 feet - with the same outfit including length and type of leader and fly you will use at CXI. And aim to limit yourself to only ONE false cast, or if you miss the target badly lift and recast in one shot. It takes a lot of wrist strength to get the smooth but powerful "snap" needed - something you can only develop with practice and wrist exercises. And only casting with wind coming from all different angles will give you a feel for what the wind is going to do to the leader and fly at different distances.

Have fun, wish I was going too

Good advice about practicing in the wind. Also, practice with heavy and big flies and practice with all your flylines, especially your sinking ones.

I'm a bit green with jealousy about your trip, so I'm giving the above advice with a bit of hesitation. Just kidding. Enjoy!

Thank you for the advice guys! William, is there a good outfit you can recommend in Sydney?
There are so many things I still need to get ready, but I am really excited. I am also looking for a descent 12wt setup, any advice on this? And like so many before, looking for the best value for money.

    Thanks again for the advice.

Rian no worries, happy to help if you have questions about CXI and gear. Which lodge will you be staying with? I've been to the Villages and to Ikari House - both excellent.

Meanwhile in Sydney the Casting Instructor I recommend is Justin Duggan - you can find him on the net if you google his name or "Sydney Fly Fishing". If he can't fit you in (very busy guiding usually) he will recommended somebody else I'm sure.

There's a reasonably good fly tackle shop in Sydney CBD - The Complete Angler - it's tucked away on the third floor of the old Dymocks building on George Street. Ask for Adam Kearns - knows his stuff. Adam could probably also hook you up with a casting instructor.

A value for money 12wt outfit for CXI? Well a lot of the guys who know they won't get huge amounts of use out of a 12wt are buying the Redington Behemoth 11/12 reel. Guys I know have / are taking them to CXI for GTs and tuna - I've heard no complaints from them, only smiles and fish pics. Read the reviews. I suggest you select backing of 65lb or more - lean towards strength rather than length of backing.

12wt fly rods come in a lot of budgets as you know - perhaps put you're feelers out for a second hand model - especially one that's seen a few good fish and hasn't broken yet

I think the right 12wt line a crucial component - it's better to get a specialised GT or big game line with high strength core because you'll probably run 50 - 60lb leader to try stop a GT that wants to exit the lagoon.

Let me know if you visit Sydney.

    Hi Rian
My brother is selling an 11 and 12wt Thomas & Thomas rod both matched with Ross reels and never been used before. I will contact him and ask what lines etc etc. He is in Cape Town
