Nic Janse van Rensburg, a regular face at the Winelands Fly Fishing shop and also current Protea Team Member will be hosting a series of clinics aimed at junior fly fishers, at Eikendal during the month of August. Nic will represent South Africa during September in Vail Colorado USA. We will be hosting a Junior fly fishing tutorial for youngsters who are looking for both tuition, and improvement in their fly fishing abilities, with the overall aim of enhancing your understanding, and confidence when approaching new waters.

This course will cover everything from casting to fly tying, as well as provide the theoretical workings of rivers and stillwaters, and how certain species can be targeted with a fly rod in both systems.

We will then move to the dam at the venue, where we will put the theory, and flies into practice, this will be a great opportunity for the youngsters to enjoy the comradery, and fun that is so closely related to this wonderful sport.

In order to provide flexibility in terms of attendance, there are four options of dates, of which only 5 juniors can be accommodated per day. However, if you would like tuition, but cannot make attendance to the specific dates, you are more than welcome to contact Nick, and a one-on-one class can be put together.

The cost per person will be R800, and will include an intensive clinic, where the knowledge, and experience of an established angler will be shared, as well as on-hand coaching, and tuition. There will be a braai for lunch, which will be provided by the host.

What you will learn:

  • How to manage, and improve your casting.
  • Knots and leader construction
  • Stillwater and river environments.
  • Stillwater techniques, and applications, and River techniques.
  • The ins-and-outs of fly tying: here we will look at tying essential flies, and their various applications.
  • Insects that are found in the Stillwater and river environments, and how to imitate, and identify them.
  • Physical application: we will then move to the dam, where we will put what we have learned into action.


What you need:

  • A 9 foor 5 or 6 weight rod and reel ( This can be provided )
  • Fly Tying Vice, and materiels. (This can be provided )
  • Rain jacket / wind breaker.
  • Sunglasses, and a peak hat.
  • A pair of gumboots, or takkies that can get wet.
