It's a difficult one Korrie. Often in SA non-fly tiers see at as expensive and don't appreciate the materials, time and experience that go into a well tied fly. Also flies that are way more durable than a cheaper fly. One of my pet hates is a fly that easily falls apart while fishing it and tails that wrap.

Agree Phillip...also looks like you have used some good hooks there, which you also wont find on cheapie commercial flies.

Agreed Philip at the end of the day the client decide whether they're prepared to pay a premium for quality flies or not....the fact that the flies are worth their salt is pretty much irrelevant.

100%, many non fly tiers don't understand the importance of fly proportions etc. They see it as just another fly or a cool looking fly. Many commercially available patterns will cost in the region of R8.00 per fly in SA, but as an example, take a commercially tied Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear. Many of these have the bottom of the thorax line up with the hook point (another extreme hate when I see these ) but at R 8.00 for that fly many will still buy it, not knowing that the the chance of the fly not hooking a fish is almost 100%.

    Hi Andre,

Yes, good hooks. Have to admit, the hooks on those dries are not intended for salmon , trout on light tippets (and fly fishers who know how to fight fish), but we can do that pattern on a salmon wire with 20 turns of hackle
