    Default Saltwater Gear Setup

    Hi Everyone

I fly fish fresh water, but want to start Saltwater Fly Fishing.

What gear would you recommend, rod, reel, line and flies.

What fish do you want to catch?
    What locations?
    Boat based or land based?

Rod: 9wt - should cover you for leeries, springer, kob, elf, grunter, small/mid size GTs. (Take your trout gear along for the smaller species like mullet and blacktails.)

Reel: Something like a Shilton SL6, or equivalent.

Line: Intermediate - you can fish the surface with quick retrieves, or deeper if you pause and use weighted flies. I suggest full intermediate because it's less affected by waves. In calmer estuary waters you can use a floating line. If you can afford both, then carry them both and change when needed - loop-to-loop connection with backing.

Flies: Some white Flippers or Gurglers , floating prawn imitations, Surf Candies in a range of sizes, a good assortment of Clousers with different dumbbell eye weights.
