Thread: Salt - Match the Hatch

  1. Default Salt - Match the Hatch

    Hi Guys,

Thought it would be informative and helpful if we share pics of fish/organisms we aim to imitate in the salt. Often there are different colour variations (prawns etc.) between different estuarine and saltwater systems etc.

A Breede Prawn - small one, about 6cm.

Took some photos of these little river crabs also from Stilbaai.
Grunter go mad for them and chase after them in amongst the grass.
Just to confirm I caught a few and put them on and caught three grunter in 5 casts.

Cool Occie, looks like a different smaller species than the Breede one below? Have a client who fishes the marshes in Stilbaai, opposite the slip, and that is the only bait he fishes.

What is always very interesting for me is how close to the real thing you can get with a fly...Phillip ive seen your work and always dumb founded at how you get there.

Ja thats where I always fish.
Looks probably like they are a different species. The ones in Stilbaai are def. darker and by the picture there eyes are sitiuated at a different position.
There are litrally thousands of them in between the grass.
Got a few ideas im going to try out but not the easiest of creatures to make a realistic imitation of.

    Thank You Jason,

It is a kind of obsession, tweaking, improvising, trying new materials and techniques. When going to bed and thinking about how to tie a specific fly, I might have to go and see a shrink
