I wonder what the grip would be like if you screwed in some felt in between the natural treads of the boot..... Will try do an experiment on some old Jonsson ankle gumboots

you will need a lot of screws to keep in position. Plus GUMBOOTS are not good for wading in strong currents etc.
you will loose it very quickly and then you will wade out barefoot.

I often wade with these in the Vaal River when I want to give my wading boots a break: ankle_gumboot_2.jpg

I wear them with neoprene socks with gravel guards, never had a problem. Have also used them on various Lesotho trips

I am always "worried" that this will come off in fast water. as it is not tight above the ankle. Some rock and surf guys use similar stuff

As mentioned, I do not expect these boots to be the strongest, longest lasting boots.
But for stealth and surreptitious wading, I think this will be really great.
And for travelling, as it takes a lot less space.
the only pity is that they do not make it in #13 or 14 to wear with waders.
So I will only wear it with normal socks, but for warmer months that is fine

that sounds perfect for those not spending to much time on the rivers.

Im looking at doing that with these boots but the synthetic ones: http://olympic-sport.co.za/product/trail-hi/

a fancy boot to grind the sole away and stick felt on.
What is the price of that boot?

With all that stitching 2 things to watch out for
    a. it might wear thru on the rocks
    b. if not dried out properly, it might rot away.

they really not that expensive, I also need ankle support due to skateboarding injuries. I already have smelly feet  so will make sure they dry properly. as for the stitching will have to play that by ear. although I have protected stitching with super glue before.
