"So here’s my point. Don’t go and get your ego all out of proportion because you can tie a fly and catch a fish that’s dumb enough to eat a car key.." - Louis Cahill - Gink and Gasoline

NOTICING
Items bought most often: 1) Hooks, 2) Ultrahair or similar
Monthly spend: Top-up purchases only, maybe R60 per month
If everybody is thinking alike, nobody's thinking - George Patton
Wiets
Saltwater wise the primary materials are strung saddle hackle, bucktail, supreme/ultra hair and flash materials.
I would disregard hooks. There are only one or two brands that guys really like and the market is almost saturated. Every Tom, Dick and Harry imports eyes nowadays, so this is also easy and cheap to get.
Quality is the main issue with the natural materials and when you do find the right quality, things get expensive.
The local importers of flash materials mostly rip us off badly. As an example, you can buy any of the Hedron Flashabou products for cheaper at most of the US retailers than what the local wholesale price is.
Monthly expenditure? Impossible to say. It varies according to the season and availability of good materials.

I tend not to buy hooks from speciality ff shops as the saltwater hooks are R65.00 when I pay R25.00 for them in a general fishing shop. Buctail and Hackle as well as flash are what I top up on most. Being a hoarder, I save the offcuts for my freshwater flies
Money.....like Grant says, not a little
Behold the fisherman. he riseth early in the morning and disturbeth the whole household. mighty are his preperations. he goes forth full of hope and when the day is ended, he returneth smelling of strong drink and the truth is not with him. originator unknown.
my stuff.... http://www.flytalk.co.za/forum/album.php?u=824[/SIZE]
Around the steel no tortur'd worm shall twine, No blood of living insect stain my line;
Let me, less cruel, cast feather'd hook, With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook,
Silent along the mazy margin stray, And with fur-wrought fly delude the prey
Bucktail - Mostly selected carefully - as all buck-tails are not equal
DNA - material - all colors
Strung saddle hackle
rabbit fur and calf tail - bonefish flies
Deer-hair
Schlappen
Loco foam - for Creasies
Tiemco 811s - Hooks
Spend - average $500 or so a month
All the best
Mike
