I have now obtained these flashing LED lights in red, green and blue. The aluminium casing is 14 mm x 10 mm diameter and is supplied with "O" Rings allowing the unit to be fully sealed. I inserted them in a sock and then into the washing machine for 20 minutes - no problem. Turn the "lid" and the LED light will start flashing - battery life is expected to be 60 hours continuous. My idea is to epoxy the aluminium casing into the balsa - the lid & LED will stick out of the balsa allowing for it to be turn on and off - also to change the batteries. I have also tested the bouyancy of the LED on a piece of basa - it will float if the balsa is about twice the volume of the LED. See images below.
