    Hi Megs.
Ja this is always an issue for beginners, where to start?...... My suggestion is get to one of the reputable fly tackle dealers in your area and get some advice from them. Most of them do run courses, as it is in their interests to sell the materials to you. If you dont come right there, you just have to get some tips from the forum guys, and learn by trial and error. There area also a few good beginners books to get. For starters, try Dean Riphagens, South African Fly fishing handbook. This book has helped many newbies, and many experienced guys alike.
Also search ther net. You will find so much stuff, you won't know what to do with it all.

as andre says. deans book is the first i bought and it will help a heap. in the beginning i tried to tie all of the flies in the book. don't. as you get more advice and go to tying evenings you get better, and you can pick a selection that you want to fish

    Some good starter books:

    • The Fly-Tying Bible by Peter Gathercole (simple, easy patterns to begin with)
    • Benchside Introduction to FlyTying by Jim Schollmeyer & Ted Leeson (very good, don't confuse this with their Benchside REFERENCE book - much more advanced)
    • The South African Flyfishing Handbook by Dean Riphagen (lots of South African patterns)

Best way to learn is to tie with someone else. Check with the local clubs or tackle dealers...

Check out this site;online course which will help you alot.

    http://hipwader.com/2004/fly-tying-course,

and also a book that helped me alot and stil is,is a book by Skip Morris called Fly Tying made clear and simple.

Let me just remind you, tying flies and not knowing what it imtates or how to fish the patterns is just as worthless as to not tying at all.Beef up on you entomology.Below is just a few of so many sites available.

If there is one thing I can say, few things work as well for teaching fly tying as watching someone do it, I'd definately try to find a place or individual that offers lessons, who knows, you might even find a willing forum member who will take it on themselves to show you the basics.

If you've never tied before, the fly tying bible might be a bit overkill and allthough it is an amazing book to have, it isn't cheap.

    You can also look at:

Fly tying for beginners - Peter Gathercole

It will introduce you to the basic techniques, terminology, materials, tools and gives you 50 odd patterns to tie with step by step pictures and contains quite a few flies that have application in the ZA context, from Troot to YellowFish, Bass, Barbel, etc.

It's a great book for novices and it's very reasonably priced.

Also to second what the other chaps say, start by tying your favourite fly, the one you tie on most when flyfishing. From there you will naturally progress to tying other patterns and invariably, creating your own flavours of well known patterns.

have fun tying, and when you are up at three in the morning tying like some of us (not necessarily all good flies though) then you know that yet another bug has chomped you on the buttocks
