My cousin fishes the WC streams with a 4wt Xplorer Classic.(He's a newby by the way, hence the entry level rod) Not sure what you guys would use up North
Hi All
I've got some krismis bonus money that is just screaming too be exchanged for tackle. Want to buy a 4# outfit mainly for stillwater trout fishing and maybe some river/stream fishing. Will the 4# be to heavy for streams??? That's when i eventually get the chance to go to one. I suppose a 3# will be a bit too light for stillwaters?
Does anyone have a suggestion for a rod and reel please?? Looking to spend 3-4g's. If i can get away with something good for 2.5 that will also be fine.
Thanks manne
Vow not to stop until i've got a kingfish, but then gentlemen... it has just begun...

If you're fishing streams around PTA, a #4 will be ok - you may hook into a carp/barble or large LS/SS yellow.
It offers more versatility as well ITO fishing streams/still waters.
I've found that often you need to put out longer casts on still waters, and a #3 sometimes can't cope with the distance.

You can fish the streams with a 4# just fine. Its not ideal but you will catch fish. If your going to spend the majority of your time on still waters then definitely go with the 4#.
Rather spend your money on Rod and line, get a cheapie reel as it's mainly there to store line.
TFO make a 4# finesse series in that price bracket, worth a look. I'm sure the other guys ill be a bit more helpful.
Around the steel no tortur'd worm shall twine, No blood of living insect stain my line;
Let me, less cruel, cast feather'd hook, With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook,
Silent along the mazy margin stray, And with fur-wrought fly delude the prey
Thanks guys so for the info so far.
I'm more convinced about buying the 4# now. Dizzy you're right, the 4# will be better for a bit more distance which one need every once in a while. 4# it is then. Will probably spend more on he rod.
Fish, your the second guy that refers me to the TFO, will def give it a cast and see.
Thanks again

I'll throw a spanner in the works and say that my #4 rod is the most underutilised rod in my forest. Too heavy for the rivers I fish and too light to quickly subdue big stillwater fish.
For stillwaters I'd go with a #5 and rivers a #3 or #2.
I have a 9# TiCrx and I love it. The after sales service (in my limited experience) is good. Chris raves about his 2# finesse, so I think the 4# will be a winner. Let us know how it goes.

He said he wants a rod mainly for stillwaters, so I'd go with the 5wt, and then buy another rod for the rivers at a later stage.
