I think the fish are "waiting for the first rains"

Their biological clock ticking and telling them "there should have been rain"
the fishing in Lakensvlei is also tough. Think the same applies there.

Hard day on the water. Great weather conditions, slight up or downstream wind.

We saw 4 fish in total, 2 were rising in slow pools, gave us the finger...
Spooked the third after walking over rock, was hiding under rock I was walking over.

Then finally caught the 4th in fast water between two pools. Good looking fish.

Yip, tough day on the Smalblaar indeed. Fished the Hotel beat yesterday. The pools in front of the Hotel had no fish in them. Moving up I saw about 5 fish of which one was spotted rising. Fish were extremely skittish, the slightest sound from wading or your feet bumping against a rock would send them off. Not to mention descending flies, even on 7 or 8X. Approaching the one rising trout sitting in ultra thin water, as I stepped on a loose rock making a slight grinding sound, causing the fish to spook, that's how crazy it is at the moment. In the end I took two, one of dry and one on a tiny size 20 brassie. To anyone fishing in these last few days, approach runs or pools with EXTREME caution from at least 10 meters away. Try to stay on exposed rocks when wading. Upon arrival at a pool keep low and watch the water for at least 5 - 10 minutes, don't cast blindly unless there are no obvious signs of a fish, stay out of the sun and use foliage as cover, keep false casts to a minimum.

Once was enough. A standard was set. The standard was too high. So was the water.

This is an event that i vowed never to attend again. There were things that were seen that cannot be unseen.

We Spent yesterday on SB2 (Helderwater)

Caught no fish, I saw 1 fish but not sure if it was a trout.
Big hatches of mayflies early in the morning but no rises (Like no rises/boils/jumping during the day).

So either my nymphing skills suck really badly or my buddy can`t get a drag free drift or as I choose to believe the drought hit the bottom part of the SB system harder than I thought.
Anybody body else have some luck on the lower SB & Molenaars beats? Or opinions?

One thing I can note is that the water is noticeably warmer than last year opening season weekend. I remember walking into Molenaars upper and getting that pins and needles feeling in my legs from the cold water compared to the cold but not that bad water temp of the weekend.
