    Question Hooks:Streamer advice

This question is aimed at Freshwater with Trout and LM Yellows in mind.

What's ur take on tying flies upside down with hook facing upward?

How does this effect your take?

Does it improve your chance of a better hookup?

I'm sure it differs with other species because of where the fish's lips are situated.

The one advantage of this type of tying is def less snags on structure wouldn't u say?And maybe a better hook penetration (Chris sit down) in the upper lip?

    Thanx

The advantages are clear: The hook-ups are better, and you get snagged up less. I try and tie all my streamers, buggers, etc with the hook point riding up. Have done so for many years, and it's always worked better than tying it normally, so the hook point rides down.

    regards

Gotto agree here.I've fished both ways and I prefer hooks riding up.

It does take longer to tie though

Aside from the other benefits like lessened snags and whatnot, it's all about the angles.

Think of where you are, where the fish is, in what direction your fly is moving and how the fish is going to hit your fly. Upside down is the way to go.

If you tie the fly right, you can turn it virtually weedless too.

I say virtually because you don't tie in an actual weed guard, the construction is just so that when is pulsing along, the hook tip isn't exposed.

All my weighted SW flies ride upside down, from the charlies to the profiles, except for the sempers weighted with on shank lead, they still ride hook tip down.

I think it also depends a lot on how you plan to fish them ... surface and midwater I personally prefer hook down ... the hook provides a sort of keel to the fly ... (eg Surf Candy - one of my favourites, silicone minnows, etc)

but for heavily weighted streamers, definitley hook up
I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific.

Thanks for the info thus far guys.

The reason/s for all my questions is to compare notes with what I'm currently using and to see if I can't improve any further or learn something extra.

It's always nice to read/hear other opinions.Keep it up please.

    Thanks
