Good afternoon everyone!! I am new on the forum.. I am from pretoria, love flyfishing mostly as well as other types of fishing eg. bass, saltwater etc.

Have been to the vaal about twice recently targeting yellows.. havent yet caught one only muddies being very keen to take my flies..

Anyway I will persist and hope you guys would be able to guide me trough your experiences..

    Howdy Dieter,

Welcome to the forum, hope you learn lots and enjoy your stay.

Don't disregard them thar those muddies, they're good practise for when you DO hook that SmallMouth that will drag you downstream

If you're finding the muddies, you're right in between the SmallMouth, do a search to find other threads relating to finding the SmallMouth 'lies' and Muddy 'lies' and how to distinguish the two, I remember there have been previous discussions regarding.

    Tight loops.

    Hi Dieter.

Welcome to many hours of addiction.

As Bertu said, search the previous threads for information that will help you get them yellow's.

And if you get a chance join some of the members on the vaal outings. There is nothing like being shown how as opposed to reading how

Addiction knows no boundaries, but i'm mostly addicted to YellowFish ... not the Vaal as such.

What works a treat if you're PTA based is to start dating a girl that lives in the Western side of JHB, has cut my Vaal drive time in half for close on the last two years now

It is round the corner, if you leave before 3:30 and drive streight there you beat the light.

It sure is addictive I would go everyday if I could.. unfortunately I already have a girl whom I taught to fish so there aint no cutting costs but at least I usually have a fishing partner its just not fun when you are being outfished sometimes..
do you guys know anything about the recent flow levels?

    Welcome,

"Please Send picture of boat". I reckon Wade will catch what I'm on about

You'll pick up a lot of tips by going through the previous posts, but as said being shown a few basics firsthand is much easier. Geelvis is reasonable venue in that its not too crowded during the week and is probably one of the closest venue to pretoria, but its name should be changed to muddie paradys. That section of the river has plenty of muddies so you have you pick your spots carefully but if you stick around for the evening rise you should get a few yellows in the pool in front of the car park by casting longer lines with a dry and dropper rig.
