    Arrow Shrimp Pattern

    Morning,

Anyone who has a nice freshwater prawn or shrimp pattern?

I have one, originally tied by a guy called Eben who came 2nd with this pattern a few years back in of of TCFF tying comps.

Unfortunately I haven't had success with it.

    Any takers?

    Thanks

Funny you say that. I've encountered huge numbers of these freshwater shrimp on some of our waters. Looking over the side of the float tube and being able to spot hundreds of them in the water, once your eyes are tuned in, because they appear nearly transparent.

I've tried a number of different imitations, but never had much success with them.

Awesome little creatures though, and fascinating that they are perfect replicas of their bigger brothers I had the pleasure of consuming the other night!

    Hi Shaun,

Ye ur right.Every outing(Vaal) I see plenty of them hanging/swimming under the hyacinth.I've tried lobbing it in there or anywhere else but I always came off 2nd best.

I look around or speak to some Oomie and he tells me "nee boetie ekt baie gevang, sommer grootbekke ook" They take their landing nets, catch a few 100,put 2-3 on a bare hook, fish it under a indicater and always manage to take a few.

The original pattern is tied reverse style placing a red bead on the bend of the hook, grizzly for legs, epoxy for body, copper wire for ribbing, white antron for tail and a few strands of flash for pinchers.

The thinking behind the red bead is that if you use a flash lite at night and point it at the river,u see these little red heads of the shrimp.Or maybe their eyes, not quite sure.

I've tried different beads but still no luck.

There has to be a way.I've heard of to many baities catching plenty of fish.

I think what you were seeing there was the Ghost Shrimp. Ed Herbst wrote an article many years ago about it, I can't remember where I saw it though, but if my memory serves me right, when certain conditions prevail, Ghost Shrimp come up from the bottom by the millions at night. They are usually gone again by first light, which is why very few anglers ever encounter them. Their numbers can be so numerous as to turn crystal clear water opaque. The fish obviously go balistic when this happens.

I've only seen it once in a small dam in Durbanville, the surface of the dam had a jelly like look to it when I arrived at first light. Closer inspection revealed millions upon millions of these shrimp. All excited, I phoned Ed about it the time and he told me that by my description I had discovered Ghost Shrimp and that it was a rare occurrence to see it in daylight. Nobody knows why they sometimes linger till after dawn.

Very interesting post, thanks Chris. I've seen them very prolific on a water called Springholm in the Natal Midlands. The water has extensive shallows, and it was there, during July when the water was incredibly clear that I saw them, also first thing in the morning.
