Awesome little creatures though, and fascinating that they are perfect replicas of their bigger brothers I had the pleasure of consuming the other night!
I think what you were seeing there was the Ghost Shrimp. Ed Herbst wrote an article many years ago about it, I can't remember where I saw it though, but if my memory serves me right, when certain conditions prevail, Ghost Shrimp come up from the bottom by the millions at night. They are usually gone again by first light, which is why very few anglers ever encounter them. Their numbers can be so numerous as to turn crystal clear water opaque. The fish obviously go balistic when this happens.
I've only seen it once in a small dam in Durbanville, the surface of the dam had a jelly like look to it when I arrived at first light. Closer inspection revealed millions upon millions of these shrimp. All excited, I phoned Ed about it the time and he told me that by my description I had discovered Ghost Shrimp and that it was a rare occurrence to see it in daylight. Nobody knows why they sometimes linger till after dawn.
