Being upriver with a close family friend, casting flies, drinking cold beer, talking rubbish .. how much better can life actually get ...

Well things got a lot better when I cast to a surface swirl and hooked this oxe-eye tarpon. I didn't even know they had them here.

The fly is a hybrid of a clouser and a flipper, it's called a neutralizer, tied by US angler and tyer Lee Haskin. They work alright!

Beautiful pics Jono! Thanks for sharing!

I'm new to the salt, having only fished about 3 times and only caught Moonies so far. Can't wait to get into some of those other guys you've posted.

An excellent post Jono. You probably caught more in that trip than most of us who live here catch in a year!

    Hey Jono...

    Great pics. Awesome estuary.

For anyone planning a trip to the estuaries in Transkei, just remember that summer fishes better than winter in terms of quantity and species of fish. Winter months produce few species and fewer fish, but better quality fish like BIG Garrick and Kob. Probably the best time is during the prawn migration/spawning from around Jan-Mar, ie if it happens.

Stunning part of the world. Rugged and harsh if you are not careful, so stay safe.

    Regards

    Great story, and pics, Jono!

I'm really sorry, that I couldn't stay longer in that area...
