Default Flys for OV1 ( Douglas Trip )

Seeing that the OV1 thread under yellows is now too many pages long, I thought I would start this thread.
What flies would you guys reccommend for this trip??? Input from NC Bass, Coop, Gerrit, and any other with first hand knowledge would be invaluable.

    My Thoughts are:
    LM Flies: MSP, Wooly Bugger ( Black & Olive # 6 - 10 ),Zonkers ( #6 - 10 )
    SM Flies: Damsel nymphs ( Olive, Silver/White #8 - 12 ), dries ( klinkies, EHC, hydrolators, #14 - 20 ), caddis pupae & larvae, mayfly nymph imitations.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific.

    Good morning

When we fished there a few years back (in Douglas but also at Pniel and Schmidsdrift) the top fly for SM in fast water was a #16 Copper John. Just the standard pattern with sparse brown CDC for legs and chocolate brown biots for the tail.

If you can arrange for access to Schmidsdrift, do so. Small piece of water below a weir with enough water for about five guys. Loads of fish.

    Cheers
    MC

    Hi MC,

Did yuou also manage a few LM's, or were you targetting mainly SM's?

    Cheers, Chris

What time of year was that?

Did you have any joy with the LM?

Has anyone tried estuary/saltwater type minnow/fry imitations for LM? ... I am thinking of smallish Clousers, Surf Candy, Silicone baitfish, etc.

Anyone know what a juvenile SM and/or Barbel looks like?

Apart from the LM flies already mentioned, I'm working on a prototype olive Rabbit (zonker) crossed with a Clouser - sort of zonker tail, a built wing body with bits of gold flash and stuff overlaid with peacock herl, with a couple of turns of rabbit zonker round the gold dumbell eyes. I tried tying the first one on Saturday at Rory's. After dipping the fly in the pool and showing the guys the wet silhouette Rory's poor dog was terrified and ran away with his tail between his legs..- or maybe it was me he was scared of?

I've a couple of other LM fly ideas which will mention later when I dig out the 'recipes' which are at home

    Hi Hermam,

Thanks for the vote in confidance.

I would add the following patterns/flies to ur list.

    LM:1.Clouser Minnows to imitate minnows in the area(olive & white,tan & white,brown & white and all black)
2.Marabou Muddlers alla Shaun Futter)Search Forum
3.My DH bullet head zonker minnow. Can be fished as a popper.Search forum.
4.Soft hackle streamers in #4.Search the forum,my favourate colours are there,I think it's posted in more trout flies,Shaunf started the thread.
5.Dragons alla Dean Riphagen and Shaun Futter, also on the forum.

(I've got 6 other mamba Largemouth patterns which I'm not gonna share, get to know me,fish with me and I'll let u have some of the pudding, this is like ur secret venue)

Sm:1.I would def add a beast of a Hopper pattern (#4,6 streamer hook 2XL,2XH) (lots of foam & Deer Hair and rubber legs)to suspend 2 heavy nymphs under it.(This is not a Madam X btw)
2.JM's black light hot head mayfly nymph(Ur fishing the lower Vaal)Grip 14731 #14,16)
3.Hot head brassie:Orange Tungsten & hot orange wire, flashabou wincase & black dubbing HE thorax,in my case no dubbing, DH thorax in olive, black, brown or natural),gold brassie(brown dubbing HE thorax)in my case no dubbing, DH thorax in olive, black, brown or natural.I like #8 Mustad Circles for this application.
    4.DDD (TMC 100 dry fly 1XF)
5.Klipspringer caddis(Ask Jacques about this one)
6.Flashgun alla Moonshine mf (my hook of choice is Mustad R72)
7.All marabou mf in black, brown, olive, grey and tan,(Padridge for legs,Medallion sheeting for wingcase, add epoxy(use the 5min one, much harder effect once done and obviously dries quicker)(my hook of choice is Mustad R72)
8.Green drake epoxy nymph in olive(shaun tied one on the forum)(my hook of choice is Mustad R72)
9.Lots of copper Johns in red, black, chartreuse and normal copper(tie them in 12's and 14's(my hook of choice is Mustad R72)
    10.Midge larva in red although I tie them in 7 colours.(Grip 14731 #10 but tie the body shorter,clear tubing,red thread,epoxy head)
    11.Para Adams
    12.RAB

The above is to add to ur current list.Note that if u add colour and size to the above list u'll have more than a 1000 patterns to choose from which happens to be a way over kill.I suggest u fish the ones u have confidance in.The list u can use once ur back,to start tying them, fish them and gain confidance in them.

    Hope the info helps
