There are many black/grey soils in the upper catchment of the Vaal. The grey colour comes from soil particles in those areas. That is where the Vaal got it's name from (vaal=grey).
Herman
Sediments from the upper Vaal would first have to traverse the entire dam, then the barrage and then eventually only get to where these guys were fishing.
Find your nearest overflowing sewer, look at the colour.

Manne!
What is going on with the flow? 11.9 at Schoemansdrif. Can this be?
Jacques
That flow meter at Schoemans is not very reliable..
Have a look at the Goose bay canyon one, takes about 3 - 4 hours for the water to get to Schoemans
not sure if that reading is correct or not, but I can confirm that the river in Parys is the lowest I've seen it since at least end October last year.
Hi guys.
Best is look at reservior and hydrology website, then check the barrage discharge. As far as my knowledge goes none of the smaller rivers below the barrage can have an impact more than 10cms think more like 5cms maxx. It takes 1and half to 2 days to reach schoemansdrift, another day or so to Orkney and another to Regina and another to klipplaatdrift. Due to evaporation and minning and farming extraction you can deduct another 5-10cms. So in layman terms if barrage flows below 40-45cms for 4days you are pretty much sure it safe to fish the mid Vaal. Fishing new virgin waters this weekend and flow looks good.

Most small rivers under normal summer conditions would add 1-3cms and maybe 5+ in normal flooding and maybe 10 in serious floods. I was at Orkney bridge yesterday and flow looked a good 20-25cms. The grass beds of last year is gone and I have not seen the Vaal this clean of organics in a long time.
