Mayfly pics esp. Machadorythidae

Hi

Anyone got pics of mayflies (nymph, dun, adult) which they suspect may be Machadorythidae. These used to be lumped under Tricroythus.

Just in case you are not sure, here is a basic description.


NYMPH
Crawler. Found in slow flowing stretches of streams. On unstable material, sand, silt etc.
Body small to medium size, bulky & tapered. Eyes narrow & protruding, on sides towards the front. Antennae short. Forelegs small, last two pairs facing rearwards. Gills inside raised chamber on top of abdomen. Three tails, held vertically.
Predator.

DUN
Brown head, Purple black turbinate eyes, ocelli with black borders. Creamy white. Purplish triangular markings on 2nd segment of Thorax. Legs whitish, with small black spot on Femora of male. Narrow wings greyish white.
Wing venation strong. Whitish antennae.

ADULT
Black eyes, pale sutures, Wings clear with Brownish yellow veins. Back of abdomen with black triangles & spots. Pale Antennae.
Brown
5-11mm

Abdomen patterns & black genital ducts should be diagnostic in both Dun & Adult

More likely to be found in warmer regions.

I do have old photos and book pics of general Tricos in various stages including lots from the Mpumalanga/Gauteng area. Trouble is they're not 'transmittable' by internet, largely due to my deficit of skills in this area! I've probably seen the Machado species but without having the skill/knowledge to classify it as a Machado-whatever species.

Your reference to things with black genital ducts lurking with intent around slow streams reminds me of some of the ho's up for grabs next to the Disco Shebeen by the bridge at Badplaas..

I agree completely Herman. Extremely laid back and down to earth is our Chris! We're all very fond of him we are! I wonder what those ho's next to the Shebeen under the railway bridge at Badplaas think though? I mean jeez, short of giving us a GPS coordinate, one couldn't hope for better directions

Seriously, I don't have the technical skills to do this, but I'm happy to photocopy and send you some, but a lot of the subtleties will be lost in the reproduction (again, so to speak...). In a quiet moment next week I will ask my son/daughter to maybe help put stuff on CD, but we're all bogged down in various sundry heavy projects/business this week! Maybe a photographic whizz like Wolf who knows his Mpumalanga entomology may be able assist in a quicker and more professional manner a propos clear and concise photos?

Are these "hardcopy" photos or digital ones. If the former dont worry, but if digital I would prefer to wait if you could entice your bairns to put it on CD

I'd love to help, but I'm none of those things.
I do have Bob Crass's old Mayfly monograms, but they were done in the 1940's -50's and though he makes mention of a couple of trico's, the graphics are just line drawings. there is a T. negrensis (black trico mayfly)... but its genital process is not defined with such ezquisite detail.
