    Default Smuggler rod advice

    Hi Guys

I’m looking for a 4wt smuggler rod – something that has more than 5 sections. I want something light and extremely compact for travel purposes (i.e needs to fit in my hand luggage).

Anyone know of anyone who makes such rods at a reasonable price? I need it before September this year.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Byron

    Hi Byron.

Explorer makes an 8 piece GUIDE 868-5 travel rod. I think it's only available in 5wt though.
Rod tube is about 40cm long and it should'nt break the bank. I've been using one for 3 years now and it's a tough little rod. It goes with me whenever I fly anywhere. http://www.janditrading.com/xplorer.html

Thanks - I've seen that one, I'll check it out as an option.

    I'm really hoping for a 4wt though.

Were those Stealth rods originally 5 piece rods? Or were they 4 piece rods that became 5 piece after use?

    Hi Byron,

Another rod to look at is the Orvis Frequent Flyer range. I played around with the 8'6" 3wt 7pc at the CPS Bells and was very impressed with it. They do a 8'6" 4wt 7pc for $195. Not sure which of the JHB stores stock them otherwise you can contact John Yelland at Upstream in Cape Town.

Check Gumtree. Do a search for fly rods, there's someone selling some no name quality 5-7 piece travelling rods from the East for R650.00

    Good luck

I'm not sure who stocks Orvis up here - I haven't seen any around. I'll be in CT for a weekend in July so I might get a chance to check them out then.

Good to see that you have got the priorities right for your overseas trip
