The 1000 casts is the learning curve Korrie. After the first largie, its only usually the next 500 casts until you hook one.

Must maybe come and get some tips on flies and tactics. Going to be there around the 5th of Oct but we hammer the smallish but the bigger largies evades us.
What's your tactics and what type of water do you fish.

Will call you when you are back. Can then get a detailed river report as well.
Will be at Potjiespram and De Hoop next week. Anyone with fresh feedback on conditions? Water levels? Clarity? Fish?

I spent the long weekend on the Lower Orange.
Water is crystal clear. From a high vantage point and with the sun at the right angle, you can see 2 meters plus deep in the deep water.
Take some time, go and sit on a high point and watch the fish. It is like an aquarium.
SM, Muddies, LM, kurpers, Barbel everywhere.
Look at the feeding behaviours of the different species.
I was lucky to have a spot where I could see LM patrolling and feeding for about 2 hours. Amazing.
You start to realize why some flies are so effective at catching LM. i.e. Pap en Vleis of Gerrit Viljoen, the Muishond, I had good results with the Goldilocks as well.
At De Hoop, walk down to the bottom section, there are a couple of spots where you can watch the fish that I know off.
It is amazing to see how the Muddies feed from the rocks, how the Large SM, patrol areas.
You are very lucky/priveleged to be able to go now and see this clear water with all the fish.
Fishing the streams/riffle water, will be an experience to see how the fish move around.

The week after a trip to the lower Orange is the worst.
Your mind wanders off, seeing the fish in the rapids, your mind's eye sees the sunset. Your arm involuntary do air casts to LM in the corner of the showroom, or little flicks with small nymphs as you walk down the passage. In the middle of the night you wake up and think you hear the river over the rapids. You sip your coffee and it feels if you are watching over the river.
