Thanks Werner. Hope it's worth my while. But I'm so desperate even shooting off a few casts would be good for my sanity. By the way, has anything come of the idea of forming a Pretoria club? I'd be keen to get involved.
I don't know what the big hype is about not going into the water at Rust de Winter, I fished there 3 consecutive weeks in november, and I spent the entire time in the water on my float tube. I don't know if the Vaalies don't know the difference between a croc and a water monitor, and I must say the later are rather large there, but I didn't see one croc or hippo the entire time and I managed to catch loads of bass and carp, and as for the barbel, well, they probably ate all the crocs, cause I couldn't land one, they snapped me off every time, I was pulled around in the tube for about 30 minutes the one time, it was about 10pm, eventually got out the water, all but my leader and ego in tact.
I'm not denying the fact that there are crocs in there, but bare in mind the good bass spots are not too far from the entrance and due to the fact that there is alot of human activity around the launch, in the form of camping areas, and the fact that the dam is big enough for the crocs to hide from any human activity, and given the great condition of the water providing good visibilty, I think that if you stay in the coves and close to rocky areas, and stay vigilant, you should do fine.
After all it is Africa, and we are meant to be tough! I know I'm gonna be seriously taken on about it by someone, but I know it's dangerous, and I didn't know that there were crocs my first time there, but I don't think that you need worry as much as some people do. I bet you the crocs are trying to stay out of your path more so than the other way around. All in all it's a safe affordable dam, easy to spot fish, and close enough to leave early, catch fish, stop over at carousel, have supper, shake some arms, watch a show, and be back home in time to tell your wife how your day was in the office. ;-)
Werner, mate...
Try the spot across from the garage at the intersection of Lavender and Airport roads near Wonderboom airport. Bit pricey but some good fish. Facilities are OK and it's about ten minutes from your place.
Are you sure they were Barbel and not maybe crocs dragging you around the water. Once saw a lady at St Lucia hook a croc in the estuary. Great fun and games until she realised what was on the end of her line.
Mike
Hi Werner.
How was the weekend fishing?
I have been to a few places in and around Pta. Found a nice place out on the maloto road that has been a good producer of bass. Otherwise i would go for Dave's sugestion and head out to Witbank/Middleberg direction. It is not far and the fishing is good.
And if you are not having luck with conventional bass bugs then dont be scared to try a smaller fly as in the picture i have attached (on this day the small northcountry spiders and PTN's outfished all the conventional fly's and Lures/rattles/rapalas.
Call me and we will make a plan to do some bass bashing. I dont even mind heading out there after work.
Going to look for that place Lardbeast mentioned, apparently it is very near Tye's place (been trying to contact him but he doesnt answer his phone so .... will keep trying) Tye, if you are reading this, call me buddy and lets make a plan to get together.

Howzit Wade,
Only thing I caught all w/e was a serious sunburn, my own fault though(the sunburn) but I picked up loads from the competitive okes, might just outfish you in a couple of months. If you really want to learn you have to get together with these guys.
A bass trip sounds like it could be in order. Maybe the w/e. Lets see if we can make a plan. My casting is now up to scratch again after my week at Castleburn.
PS: Nice bass there btw
Fishing is just my thing. I don't know what it is but it seems that i just can't get enough of it.
I dont know what happened but now when i try to read the latest posts under this thread i get blocked by works firewall but i can get to the other pages (Posting reply from page 2) and i am realy interested to see what gets said.
