Wire is a bit more difficult.
Once you have kinked it, bent it. It is very difficult to realign the weave.
Here is one of the best models

A nice and easy weave to use.

This may have been asked before, apologies if I missed it.

With all the effort of the weaving, what distinct advantages would such a pattern have?

..Thanks that is the one I have used in my hopeless attempts to tie some flies. If you use that as a body for a dragonfly nimph and you use embroidery cotton it looks great. Btw that is a macrame (sp??) knot and several others can be used very effectively in fly tying!! Some others can be found here:

    HI Mario,

I would not say that there are any real advantages, for me it is just something different. The same when using beads to build a body, no real advantage here either, but both weaves and beaded flies will catch fish.

    HI KarelM,

Thanks for this, will check it out. It just takes some practice to get the hang of it. Keep trying. I will carry on as soon as my vice is fixed, hate using my old one.

With all the postings of flies and fly boxes, I asked my CZ friend, Jiri Pechjar, to send me a photo or 3 of what his tying looks like, when he is on the serious tying mission.
Here are a couple of photos.
