I have over the last two weeks flogged the waters of Sandvlei (in the marina) to a froth, in search of Leeries. For my efforts I had one chase and one take, very close to the side on a large, white siliclone. The take was from a sizeable fish that broke a 7kg tippet on the first run. Given that the Southerly was howling that day (as with most other days) I assume that a windknot was the culprit!
Not very productive at all and extremely difficult fishing.
Other guys tried live bait and got one or two fish and some enquiries.
at the end of last year I had a "Half hour Blitz" of action one evening where I got a chase on most casts and one take. I was fishing next to a Sandvlei local and he said that we were fishing at the right time. He says the Leeries come on when the sun hits the mountains and go off again when the sun disappears. Strange, but it seemed to be true.
Can anyone please let me know how do i get to the channel that every one is talking about and any one going and in need off a fishing partner i WILL make myself availible
Drive down the M5, towards Muizenberg. Through Lavender Hill etc. When you get to the first Marina Da Gama turn off take it to the right. It is called something like Uitzig. Go trough the gates\pillars. Take Bluefin Ave to your left. Drive down it till you get to Mullet Close. Turn down there and park at the end of the street. The Canal is past the Boom gate thingie.
thank man,i recon i might go and give it a bash tonight, thats if the wind is not howling like usual
otherwise i might go and stalk a couple off biggmouthes
witch ever bites my fly
I've heard the theory abut the sun touching the mountain. I have fished that time as much as any other, and the results have been consistent - sparse fish. The chase and the take I did have happened at about 16h00, a good few hours before the witching hour.
Where did you get yours gkeiser? If you were next to a local, it was probably on Park Island facing the marina?
Excellent. Its now become a "thing" with me. I have to get a Leerie out of Sandvlei. With Blakes (and apparently Witsand) as quiet as they currently are, perhaps now is the time...
So when would you guys be keen on meeting up and going to sandvlei,Iam as eager as a beaver to go and try my luck!!
But I need some buddies to go with me...
We are planning on going to strand tomorow night and maybe we are lucky.
Same story again this evening - I fished from 18h00 to 20h00 and from about 19h30 to 19h45 I had a couple boils under the fly and a few chases. I saw the boils, started stripping faster and got the chases but no takes.
