    Wire and tinsel are the traditional ribbing materials of choice as they probably added a bit of sparkle and flash way back in the day before we had so many readily available synthetic dubbings but these days the dark mono (like doubleX for example) or black braid are far superior. They're much thinner, cheaper and stronger - you can pull the cr@p out of them to really get nice deep segmentation. You can then afford an extra wrap or two under your thorax when you tie off to really ensure you have nice strong flies. Keep using wire if you're happy with it but dont be afraid to experiment, that siad I'd try mono a bit thinner than 4x for the size flies you're tying.
