Howdy everyone..

has anyone fished Wiesenhoff recently? I am asking specifically with regard to the bass rather than the trout fishing.

Are float tubes still allowed?

I went for a scout last week Wednesday. There were a couple of small LM Bass swimming around, but not enough to tempt me to go back soon.

i fished wiesenhof in late dec and we got a lot of small bass. it was quite windy, the water is very clear and there were about 10 people fishing and all reports of small fish. (spinners as well as fly)
you can float tube and there are still boats there but the day we fished, they were scattered all over the dam. if you use them, take your own oars. the water was nice and high.
fishing is R80.00. you never know what will happen.

Hi Grant,

Wiesenhof allow float tubes. I lived on the farm for two years and can highly recommend Wiesenhof as a fishing venue. Siggy built the big dam in the reserve with the sole purpose of creating prime fish habitat. It has beed stocked with smallmouth, largemouth (Northern strain mainly, some Floridas), Spotted bass, tilapia and we have stocked it the last time in 2005 with trout, should be some big ones left. The dam is up to 13 meters deep when full, with a variety of islands, drop offs, weedbeds, islands and timber. All along the dam wall there are some root strutures of trees in approx. 8 ft. of water (when full). I've taken smallmouth up to 55cm FL and largemouth up to 2 kilo. Biggest largemouth I'm aware of is 3.5kg and smallmouth 2.6, biggest Spotted bass I've taken is in the region of 700 grams. Tilapia up to 1.5 kg is common and I've taken 7 here with a variety of flies including Klinkhammer, Madame X and even Clousers.

The smaller dams are also worth a shot, with bass up to 3kg. taken, especially the one just above the chalets is nice to tube. Apart from the fishing it's a stunning venue to have a picnic with the better half (there is a toilet), with Sprinbok, Eland, Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Bontebok coming down to drink. Also seen a Rooikat/Lynx.

The photo of the guy standing on the concrete platform use to be a roller skating ring. I use to skate there as a tjokkertjie. I fished a spin rod there quite a few years back before by fly fishing days and quickly landed a few solid fish. I saw some huge ones in the shallows. That area gets quite busy over the weekend, so if you can get there in the week it should be super

and there i was browsing through the letters and here i see a photo of my wife. she's the one with the bass. the shit, i've never caught one that big yet. you know how it burned my ass to take the photo.

Philip, I couldn't make out any big floaty popperey things sticking out of them Basses mouths in the pics. Is subsurface a better bet there or would it be worth starting with Poppers/Sliders/Divers etc?

Hi Grant,

Weather dependant, early mornings, last light, overcast conditions poppers/divers do work. Clousers, charlies, woolheads, dragons, muddlers and strip leeches in orange, olive and brown on an intermediate line can be deadly. Hit the shady spots, and edges of weed beds when its bright conditions. Some flies with weedguards presented in the timber with heavy tippets (12/15lb flouro) can be very effective. When a bass eats the fly the take can be very subtle at times (feels like hooking weed), as Siggy says us trout guys don't know how to strike a bass, you have to cross his eyes when setting the hook

Also consider fishing smaller, deeper and slow when the fishing is quiet.

Maybe we should get together there one day and pack out a braai aswell. Bring the wifes and kiddies along, they can keep eachother busy while we fish
