Further our chat at lunchtime, Korrie, that does indeed sound a very interesting rod!
With the thread of the ideal SM rod, I read all the replies, comments etc.
Then I have my own personel point of view as well.
I looked at the various sites internationally and new products.
I noticed that SAGE have launced a #5 11' Z-Axis rod.
Having fished with the 9"6 #5 rod I know how light etc this rod is, how it casts etc.
I reckon, without testing the rod or casting it, this #5 11'' rod could be the ultimate SM nymphing rod. Please note, I say nymphing. Light, responsive, good backbone, good recovery etc.

I can think that this is purely from the demand on the European continent.
In general the American market prefers a shorter rod. The Europeans prefer longer rods. Too name but a few: Gatti, Greys have led the way with longer rods. It seems that SAGE have realised, that there is more to fly fishing than casting a dry fly on a 9" rod.
PS before I get slatted, Greys are English. But it is on the otherside of the Atlantic.

Yes Korrie I think in Europe the guys have been used to using longer rods and there is more demand for same. I also feel there is a lot more worldwide cross-pollination now in terms of fishing equipment and techniques. Not only west-east, but also north-south. A lot of it I'm sure has to do with excellent websites like our Fly Talk!

Yes, very interesting inddeed. The Z-Axis 11 foot rod comes in 5 , 6, 7, 8wt
It however does not appear on their website, but is in the catalogue.
John at upstream is going to get some more info for me, and find out why it isn't on the site, but yes, could just be the ultimate nymphing rod for small mouth yellows, if you are a proponent of the long stick, as I know Korrie is.
I personally don't like Sage and if TFO can't sort me out I'll get one our local builders to built me one.
Def interested from my side.
I would go for either a 5wt or a 6wt.

I am not the biggest name chaser myself. But I have fished with the Z-axis, and it is a lovely rod. But if a company or name, wether it is SAGE, TFO or GLOOMIS makes a sweet stick, I will praise the specific rod. Nymphing is a very specific field in the fly fishing genre. For that I have specific needs. I think that perhaps this rod may fit in my needs for SM yellows. Big river, big fish, strong fish.

True words spoken Korrie, see my problem or irritation rather staying in PTA means I would have to drive to JHB for service, etc, etc.if I owned a Sage.
5min from house is the house of TFO which happens to be a great stick, great service and good friend of mine in Adrian. It's a no brainer to me really.
So ja I should've said it differently,I don't dislike Sage at all,it's the other factors related, that I'm having problems with.
Also,I have a Gloomis, broke it once, waited 3 months to replace it.I cannot fish like that hence the fact that I went out and bought a few rods just in case.
TFO keeps spares in house and if he doesn't have I would have to wait 3 weeks max to get a replacement.
Straying off the topic now,sorry!!!

11' would be handy for Czech nymhing but it's going to be interesting landing a big fish in fast water with such a long rod, may need a longer handing net
Fly-fishing surpasses the need to actually catch a fish, it becomes a mindset, and with time, an obsession.
Lord, grant that I may catch a fish so big that even I,
When speaking afterwards,
May have no need to lie.
Amen
