    Default Honorary rangers, cape Streams

The honorary ranger programme looks like it is finally going to get off the ground.
Stanton and I had a meeting with Deon Russouw, and a basic starting point was identified, Stanton has been given the task of co ordinating actions between the CPS and Cape Nature, and I will assist where needed.
The honorary ranger programme, will take the form of a full Friday and Saturday lecture sessions, and thereafter, the delegates will be accreddited with Cape Nature, to patrol the rivers and inspect for permits, while on a day's fishing. We will be given Cape Nature credentials, and limited powers. This will initially begin with a trial period. We anticipate this programme to be in place and ready to operate by the beginning of the 2009 stream season.
There will be limited availablilty to about 40 people, which will be opened to other intersted groups as well, ie. hiking clubs etc. So get your name down without delay.
If you are interested in participating in this, and have a genuine interest to contribute to the protection of our fishery, please add your name to this thread. Please be aware that it may require a certain amount of committment, as there may be occasions where you may be asked to participate in Cape nature inspections, so it could involve a non fishing, trip to the streams, once every few months.
    Any questions, please ask.

Andre, I amazed that you have not had more response from this especially after numerous posts regarding hikers and field trippers spoiling runs etc. One question, is it imperative that the course has to be held on a Friday? Is it not possible for 2 consecutive Saturdays?

Hi, I am quite interested in this. I havent joined CPS yet, but will next year. When will the course be? Is the '09 stream season from jan or sept? What is the costs involved? Is there a website where one can read more?

This is a good question, and one we did cover with Dean. It is a case of logistics, where the different presenters of the various modules have indicated that a two day "crash" course will be better suited to themselves.
If it turns out that this is a major factor in influencing support for this, I will certainly motivate that it be conducted differently.
yes, I am also surprised that the response has been low, but it is early days.
One thing I can say, is that we have taken all the complaints seriously, and are doing something pro active to address the issue, so if the complainers are not prepared to become part of the solution, We would be dissapointed. This is our best opportunity to date, to get the situation on the Cape Streams sorted out.

Andre, I would be interested in this programme, but a course during the week is a problem for me. Pencil me in until we have confirmation of everything.

Hi Andre, i would be interested, please put my name forward, from what you say it would not be as big a commitment in the long run as people may think, what i mean by that is,if you fish the streams anyway how much of your time will it take up?? none, you are already there, you say every couple of months you would have to miss a days fishing to help protect the streams, does not sound like a bad deal to me.Looking forward to helping out where i can.

    Cheers Nick.

André, would this only include certain reserves or will you be an honnorary game ranger on all the CNC reserves? I am also interested in this but would like to do something on our beaches for example.

Overall I think this is a great idea!

Yes, Nic this ecactly what prompted our decision to launch such a programme due to anglers being on the water on most weekends i.e. more eyes to watch out for any wrong doing.

Another thing to touch on what Andre forgot to mention was the different aspects of the course. Those who sign up will be lectured by specialist in their respective fields and ranges from fish biology, entomology, reptiles, birds, policing and fynbos flora etc. So, alot of interesting subjects will be covered that would definitely enhance your angling experience.

I think a lot more people will be interested, it all depends on the days that it will take place.
Once more definite days are available, I am 100% sure more people will commit. I for one, will be in.
